Some objects are just things. And then there are objects that carry a story — of hands, of craft, of a community, and of the earth itself. This is one of those objects.
The Jaro Terracotta Planter is handcrafted by skilled artisans in Sabanagrande, Honduras through Meso Goods — a fair trade maker committed to creating sustainable income opportunities for craftspeople and their families. Every planter is made to order, meaning yours is shaped, fired, and finished specifically for you.
Terracotta — from the Italian for “baked earth” — is one of humanity’s oldest and most enduring materials. The process begins with raw clay, harvested from the earth and carefully prepared to remove impurities. Skilled artisans then shape each piece entirely by hand — coiling, smoothing, and forming the clay into its final form through a process that requires both technical mastery and an intuitive feel for the material that only comes with years of practice. Once shaped, each planter is air-dried slowly to prevent cracking, then fired in a kiln at high temperatures that transform soft clay into the hard, porous, warm-toned terracotta we know and love. The result is a material that is simultaneously ancient and timeless — as at home in a modern minimalist interior as it is in a sun-drenched garden.
Sabanagrande is a small municipality in the Francisco Morazán department of Honduras with a deep-rooted tradition of ceramic and terracotta craft. The artisans who make this planter are not factory workers — they are skilled craftspeople whose knowledge of clay, form, and firing has been developed over years and passed through generations. Through Meso Goods’ fair trade model, each purchase directly supports sustainable wages and dignified livelihoods for these makers and their families. When you bring this planter into your home, you are not just buying a beautiful object — you are participating in a supply chain that puts people first.
