Some objects carry a story so extraordinary that wearing them feels like an act of witness. The Recycled Bombshell Ball Necklace by SLATE + SALT is one of those objects. Handmade in Ban Naphia, Laos by skilled artisans who have transformed the remnants of war into emblems of peace, this 1” aluminum pendant on a 30” adjustable cord is made from recycled aluminum bomb parts — the physical legacy of one of the most devastating bombing campaigns in human history, reborn as something beautiful, wearable, and full of hope. To wear this necklace is to carry that story with you — and to participate, in a small but real way, in the ongoing work of turning destruction into dignity.
Laos is the most heavily bombed country per capita in the world. From 1963 to 1973, the US Air Force dropped a planeload of cluster bombs over Laos every eight minutes for nine consecutive years — more than two million tons of ordnance in total. In the years after the war, the villagers of Ban Naphia began gathering aluminum from exploded bombs and transforming it into spoons. That tradition of redemptive craft has grown into a thriving community of approximately 13 families producing more than 150,000 pieces per year — spoons, bracelets, earrings, and pendants — all from war and non-war scrap aluminum, all handled safely under training from Helvetas, a Swiss NGO. The remnants of this legacy have been transformed into emblems of peace. This necklace is one of them.
The Recycled Bombshell Ball Necklace is more than jewelry. It is a conversation — a quiet, powerful declaration that beauty can emerge from the darkest places, that human ingenuity and resilience are stronger than destruction, and that the things meant to harm can be remade into the things that heal. It is the kind of piece that people notice, ask about, and remember. And every time you tell the story, you honor the hands that made it and the community that transformed their history into something the world can wear with pride.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9
