Be still. And know that He is God.

Psalm 46 was written in the midst of real, overwhelming crisis. The opening verses paint a vivid picture: “the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea… waters roar and foam… nations are in uproar and kingdoms fall.” Many scholars believe it was composed during the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem under Sennacherib — when the city was surrounded, destruction seemed certain, and the people had nowhere to turn but God. That night, He miraculously delivered them.

And right in the middle of all that terror, God speaks: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) It is not a passive suggestion. It is a sovereign command — to cease striving, to release control, and to rest in the unshakeable truth that He is God and He is enough. The power of those words only lands the way it does because of the storm surrounding them.

Centuries later, Martin Luther drew on Psalm 46 when he wrote A Mighty Fortress Is Our God during one of the most turbulent periods of the Reformation — further cementing this psalm’s identity as a declaration of faith written for the hardest of moments.
