In rural Senegal, Wolof women have been weaving baskets from millet grass for generations — a craft as old as the villages themselves, practiced by skilled hands that know the grass, know the pattern, and know how to make something that is both beautiful and built to last. The Mbare Dou Lid Storage Basket is the fruit of that tradition: a 23" x 18" wide, low storage basket woven from millet grass and natural colored plastic threads that add strength and durability to the organic form. The result is a basket that is warm, natural, and contemporary all at once — the kind of object that looks like it has always been in the room.
The uses are as varied as the rooms of a home. Use it as a hamper for towels in the bathroom. Fill it with throw blankets in the den. Let the children pile their toys into it in the playroom. Set it in the entryway for shoes. Place it in the bedroom for extra pillows or folded linens. Wherever it goes, it brings the warmth of handmade craft and the quiet beauty of natural materials — the millet grass tones and the clean monochrome natural finish that belongs in any decor, in any season, in any room.
Each basket is made by hand in Senegal by the Wolof women of Mbare — weavers whose skill is their livelihood and whose craft is their legacy. When you bring this basket into your home, you bring their work with it. You become part of the story of a woman in rural Senegal who wove something beautiful and sent it out into the world.
