Four words. Written over the waters that swallowed his children.
In 1873, Chicago businessman Horatio Spafford sent his wife and four daughters ahead to England on the ocean liner Ville du Havre. Midway across the Atlantic, the ship was struck and sank in just 12 minutes. All four daughters — Annie, Maggie, Bessie, and Tanetta — were lost. His wife Anna survived, clinging to wreckage until she was rescued. The telegram she sent her husband read simply: “Saved alone.”
Spafford immediately sailed to be with her. As his ship passed near the place where his daughters had perished, the captain marked the location. It was there — standing over those waters — that Horatio Spafford wrote:
“When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll — whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.”
Composer Philip Bliss later set the words to music, and the hymn has endured for over 150 years as one of the most powerful declarations of faith ever written. Not because life was easy. But because God was present in the hardest moment imaginable.
It is well is not a statement of circumstance. It is a statement of surrender — a declaration that peace is not the absence of suffering, but the presence of God in the middle of it.
The It Is Well Inspire Board brings that declaration into your home — a quiet, steady reminder for anyone walking through grief, loss, uncertainty, or simply the weight of an ordinary hard day. Display it in your bedroom, living room, or entryway, and let those four words speak what the heart sometimes cannot.
