Madeleine, the Montessori wooden library for children
The Montessori approach to children’s books is built on one simple and profound insight: a child who can see the cover of a book will choose it. When books are stored spine-out on a conventional shelf, they are invisible to a young child who cannot yet read titles — the books exist, but the child cannot access them independently. When books are displayed cover-forward on a low, open shelf at the child’s own height, the covers become invitations. The child browses, recognizes, reaches, and chooses — freely, independently, and entirely of their own will. That act of choosing is the beginning of a reading life.
The Madeleine bookcase is designed entirely around that principle. Three graduated shelves at child height display books cover-forward, with shelf depths sized for the full range of children’s books: 8.5cm at the top for slim board books and small picture books, 11cm in the middle for standard picture books, and 13.5cm at the bottom for large A4-sized books and activity books. The solid natural beechwood construction gives the piece a warmth and weight that painted MDF furniture cannot replicate — a bookcase that looks and feels like a piece of real furniture, scaled for a child’s world. All corners and edges are fully rounded for safety. Wall-mountable or freestanding against a wall. Simple assembly with instructions included.
