In rural Senegal, Wolof women have woven millet grass into baskets for generations — a craft passed down through hands and households, shaped by the rhythms of daily life and the materials the land provides. The Oval Storage Basket Set by Mbare brings that tradition into the modern home in its most graphic, contemporary form: three nesting oval baskets handwoven from millet grass and black plastic threads, the natural and the black creating a bold, minimalist pattern that is entirely the product of skilled hands and intentional craft. Every basket is made by hand. Every basket is one of a kind.
The Wolof people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Senegal, known for their rich traditions of craft, trade, and community. For Wolof women in rural villages, basket weaving is both a livelihood and an art form — each basket begun and completed by a single pair of hands, coiled and stitched with the patience and precision that only a lifetime of practice produces. The black plastic threads woven through the millet grass are a deliberate craft choice, adding tensile strength and durability that allows the basket to hold its shape and carry real weight for years.
The set of three nesting ovals — small (10” x 9” x 7”), medium (14” x 12” x 8”), and large (18.5” x 15” x 11”) — works in every room and every role: towels in the bathroom, throw pillows in the living room, toys in the child’s room, a knitting project in progress by the sofa. Display them nested together as a sculptural focal point, or spread them through the home wherever storage and beauty are both needed.
