Salt and pepper shakers that make guests stop and ask: what are those?

The PUIK Design BOEIEN Salt & Pepper Shaker Set is not your ordinary shaker. Designed by Ka-Lai Chan for PUIK, each shaker is mouth-blown from glass and fitted with a natural cork stopper — and here is the detail that makes them completely unlike anything else on a table: the bottom is convex. Not flat. Convex. Which means that when you set them down, they rest at a slight, deliberate tilt — leaning gently, as if mid-conversation, dynamic and alive in a way that no flat-bottomed shaker ever could be. It is a small design decision with a large effect: the table suddenly has personality. The shakers become a talking point, a moment of delight, a small beautiful thing that makes the whole meal feel more considered. Supplied as a set of two.

This is the gift for the person who has everything. The housewarming gift that will be noticed. The dinner party conversation starter that never gets old. A piece of genuine design thinking, made by hand, that earns its place on every table it touches.

BOEIEN — A Dutch Word for What These Shakers Do

Boeien is a Dutch word that means “to captivate,” “to fascinate,” “to enchant.” It is the feeling of being unable to look away — of something holding your attention so completely that everything else falls away for a moment. It is, in every sense, the perfect name for these shakers. PUIK is a Dutch design brand, rooted in the Netherlands’ long tradition of bold, inventive, beautifully considered design — a tradition that gave the world Delft pottery, the De Stijl art movement, and some of the most celebrated product designers of the modern era. Dutch design is known for its wit, its willingness to challenge convention, and its belief that everyday objects deserve the same creative ambition as fine art. The BOEIEN shakers are a perfect expression of that spirit: a salt and pepper set that refuses to be ordinary, that finds a way to be genuinely surprising, and that — true to its name — captivates everyone who encounters it.

Mouth-Blown Glass — A Craft of Breath and Skill

Mouth-blown glass is one of the oldest and most demanding of the glassmaking crafts — a technique that has been practiced for over two thousand years and that no machine has ever been able to fully replicate. A glassblower gathers molten glass on the end of a long metal pipe, then shapes it entirely through breath and movement — rotating the pipe, controlling the airflow, coaxing the glass into form through a combination of physical skill and intuitive judgment that takes years to develop. The result is a vessel of extraordinary quality: the glass has a warmth and a slight irregularity that machine-made glass never achieves, a sense of being genuinely made rather than produced. Each BOEIEN shaker is mouth-blown individually, which means that no two are ever exactly alike — the honest, beautiful signature of a craft made by human breath and human hands.
